Mary’s Tree Monument

With funding from a bequest by local resident and park lover Mary Hill, the Friends of Roundhay Park engaged local sculptor Shane Green to transform a dead tree into a wonderful new attraction in the area near Canal Gardens.

The Leeds Architecture Awards 2016 took place in Leeds Town Hall on the evening of 2nd March 2017. Mary’s Tree had been short listed by the professional jury in the category Public Realm and Landscape Design and it won a Highly Commended certificate, just missing the top spot, which went to Sovereign Square, a new park in the centre of Leeds. However the final award of the evening was the People’s Choice Award voted for by the general public, chosing from all the short listed entries… and the winner is – Mary’s Tree..
